Update from our Chair

Dear Stanford Civil & Environmental Engineering Alumni, Friends, and Community,

Spring is in full bloom on campus, and we are getting excited to celebrate our School of Engineering turning 100 this year. Here in CEE we are proud to have been one of the founding departments when the school was formed in 1925, and we are even more proud to have been a founding part of the university itself when Stanford opened its doors in 1891!

We look forward to participating in our Centennial Celebration and Showcase on May 15 here on campus. There will be hands-on activities, displays, and exhibits, including many showcasing the important work of our CEE faculty and students in achieving our mission “to create solutions for cities, communities, and nature to thrive.” And there will be cake! We look forward to welcoming all of our alumni and friends who can join us.

Please see below for some recent department highlights and news. As always, we are grateful for your continued engagement and support of our Stanford Civil & Environmental Engineering community.

Sincerely,
Sarah Billington

Sarah Fletcher leads new AI-Driven project

Assistant Professor Sarah Fletcher, who is also a Center Fellow of the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment, received a seed grant from the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI). Sarah will lead a project that will improve outdated drought planning through AI.

The grants from Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability will support CEE research ranging from real-time hybrid simulation methods to descriibing animal behavior as a form of "matter."

Ali Boehm co-leads new research project revealing diversity of microbial life

A new Stanford-led project shows how microbial communities in coastal groundwater respond to infiltrating seawater.

Recycling lithium-ion batteries delivers significant environmental benefits

Will Tarpeh, professor of chemical engineering and, by courtesy, of civil and environmental engineering, shares new research that shows greenhouse gas emissions, energy consumption, and water usage are all meaningfully reduced when - instead mining for new metals - batteries are recycled.

In the news: Rebuilding homes all-electric with solar

Professor Mark Jacobson explains how areas affected by Los Angeles fires have the opportunity to reduce energy and construction costs by rebuilding only all-electrics homes.
