Update from our Chair

Dear Stanford Civil & Environmental Engineering Community, Alumni, and Friends,

I hope everyone’s summer is off to a great start. Please join me in congratulating our recent graduates! The picture above is from the department’s diploma ceremony held in Memorial Auditorium. This year our department awarded 28 Bachelor of Science degrees, 213 Master of Science degrees, 2 Engineer degrees, and 24 PhD degrees. We are proud of our students and their remarkable perseverance through the pandemic. It was a joyful afternoon celebrating their achievements with their families and friends.

I am saddened to report the recent passing of Professor Emeritus Perry McCarty in early June. We have included a link to an article about his legacy as well as information regarding a gathering on campus to honor him in October of this year below.

I encourage you to stay connected with us throughout the year – we would love to highlight alumni updates in the future! We are grateful for your support and ongoing participation in the Stanford Civil & Environmental Engineering community.

Sarah Billington

Undergraduate Capstone

This past spring, the capstone courses for the Civil Engineering and the Architectural Design majors in CEE were conducted jointly. This year's capstone projects took on the challenges of planning and designing a structure that integrates architecture, structural engineering, building envelope design, environmental engineering, hydrology, fluid mechanics, geotechnical engineering, sustainability, and construction.

The Health Impacts of Climate Change

Professors Will Tarpeh and Khalid Osman were awarded $1.35 million by the EPA to examine sanitation-related environmental contaminants. Through a comparison of two communities (one urban, one rural), they’ll work to better understand and address the impacts of climate change on sanitation infrastructure.

The Future of Everything: Wastewater

Professor Bill Mitch sees wastewater as a potential solution to water resource challenges, if only we can eliminate the impurities. Mitch designs systems to remove toxic chemicals from wastewater and enable its reuse in drinking water supply. It’s not easy, but it costs half as much as desalinating seawater, Mitch tells host Russ Altman on this episode of Stanford Engineering’s The Future of Everything podcast.

Teaching Leadership for Scientific Mega-Projects

The Project Leadership Institute, led by Professor Mike Lepech, prepares leaders with the technical and managerial skills to lead long-term, multi-billion-dollar undertakings for some of the world's largest science research projects. Students enrolled through the Stanford Center for Professional Development learn how to manage challenging projects in previously uncharted scientific territory.
