Update from our Chair

Dear Stanford Civil & Environmental Engineering Community, Alumni, and Friends,

Please join me in congratulating our recent graduates! Below you will find a link to our CEE commencement page to learn more about the achievements of our students, staff, and faculty. It was a wonderful afternoon with a packed auditorium full of families and friends celebrating together.

We hope you enjoy our department highlights including student and staff spotlights, recent research and education activities, and many faculty, staff, and student awards. We also include a wonderful “behind the CV” story provided by Prof. Emeritus Craig Criddle, who will formally retire in the upcoming academic year. Three additional members of our faculty, Dr. John Barton, Prof. David Freyberg, and Prof. Jeff Koseff, will also be retiring in the coming year. We wish them all the very best in their retirement!

I hope you all have a wonderful and relaxing summer. I encourage you to stay connected with us throughout the year. We are grateful for your support and ongoing participation in the Stanford Civil & Environmental Engineering community.

Sincerely,

Sarah Billington

Understanding how racism and emotion impact affordable housing support

"Affordable housing impacts many aspects that are tied to both individual well-being and community well-being. We need to work to change the narrative in the public's mind about what affordable housing is and can be for society as a whole," said Sarah Billington, professor of civil and environmental engineering at Stanford.

Honoring Professor Craig Criddle's Career

image[21].png

On the eve of Professor Craig Criddle's retirement, we'd like to share a first-person account he wrote about his career. Professor Criddle shared this story with students in the CEE course, "Intro to PhD studies" a few years ago. In this course, our students participate in a session known as "Behind the CV." As a part of the session, faculty members join our students to share their official bio, and then, a more personal, behind the scenes story about their career trajectory. The exercise offers students an opportunity to hear first-hand accounts from faculty about the experiences and encounters that culminate in an academic career.
