Update from our Chair

Dear Stanford Civil & Environmental Engineering Alumni, Friends, and Community,

I hope this newsletter finds you well and enjoying fall. In September, we welcomed over 200 new students into our department! These students include a new cohort of first-year PhD students, numerous MS students across our five master’s degree programs, and many newly declared undergraduates – we are thrilled to have them join our community.

I’m also pleased to announce that we welcomed our newest faculty member in July, Professor Christine Baker. She was quickly tapped to share her insights on how to enjoy the coast like a scientist for a Stanford Report article. Below you can read more about Prof. Baker, as well as several departmental research highlights, student and staff spotlights, and recent award recipients from across our department.

We're grateful for your continued engagement and support of the Stanford CEE community. Please keep in touch with us as the year progresses – we're always happy to hear from you and to stay connected!

Sincerely,

Sarah Billington

Untapped potential: How water systems can help accelerate renewable energy adoption

As power grids rely more on renewable energy sources like wind and solar, balancing energy supply and demand becomes more challenging. A new analysis by CEE PhD student Akshay Rao in the Mauter Lab shows how water systems, such as desalination plants and wastewater treatment facilities, could help enhance grid stability and create new revenue streams.

Low-carbon concrete floors could pave the way to a health solution

Unlike dirt floors common in some rural parts of the world, concrete floors are easily cleaned of disease-carrying pathogens – but they come at a high environmental cost. Profs. Sarah Billington, Alexandria Boehm, and Michael Lepech collaborate with colleagues in the School of Medicine to explore how a low-carbon flooring mix could provide a solution.

A new approach to the problem of water affordability

Soaring water utility bills force many households to ration water use for essential needs while still falling behind on payments. Prof. Sarah Fletcher and her students offer a new approach to measuring water affordability that could help utilities and government agencies identify and aid those most at risk.
